Helsinki Christmas Market is a foodie heaven

Helsinki Christmas Market features a food offering that is highly ambitious in its quality and variety in European – or even global – comparison. As in recent years, Helsinki’s top restaurants have made their culinary mark on the market.

The two Christmas Market food courts are located on both sides of the central statue of Emperor Alexander II. Each one has a main restaurant: one is Nolla, a zero-waste bistro which was recently voted Restaurant of the Year by a renowned Finnish food culture magazine. Nolla focuses on locally produced organic produce: waffles and flatbreads are accompanied by vegetables and fish, and the Nolla version of the hot Christmas drink glögi is made from apple and spiced with dill and caraway. Sharing the title of this year’s main restaurant is Kolmon3n, which again this year has come over from the Kallio district to delight market-goers with their Helsinki glögi, special Christmas dessert and more.

One of the food courts has an experimental vibe with creative modern holiday cuisine such as Christmas-flavoured pizza by Linko&Tenho and a hearty vegan borscht soup by Pokrovan veljestö, complemented by a slice of mushroom pie. Mama Nikolas will serve some popular vegan fake salmon made of smoke-infused marinated carrots. #Tuoresipsi is known for crisps made on the spot from potato, beetroot and sweet potato and served with a dip. The bakery-winebar Way recently opened in the Kallio district and will pay a visit to the city centre with Christmas pastries glazed with organic toffee, as well as tasty sourdough bread. Other remedies for a sweet tooth include doughnuts by Nam Nam Donitsi.

The second food court will be taken over by more traditional Christmas fare: comfort food sandwiches, venison sausages by Feri’s, mushroom and fish treats by Maannos, pastries by Maslo and gigantic cinnamon buns by Café Regatta.

There are drinks ranging from hot and cold beverages from hot chocolate to kombucha. The Christmas staple glögi comes in 10 varieties such as infusions of spruce sprout or apple, red wine with wild herbs, and one is made from natural wine. There is also a wide selection of microbrewery beers.

The market offers every possible Christmas food to make your holiday festivities as delicious as possible: traditional casseroles, honey from Helsinki, flavoured mustards, dry meat, reindeer and wild game products, fish, toffee without additives, chocolates and fudge, and Karelian pasties fresh from the oven.
