Olkimaja

Himmeli is a traditional Christmas decoration made from real straw. The meticulous craft has gotten rarer and rarer as it requires a lot of precision and patience. Pirkko learned the art of himmeli making from her mother as a little girl and now after retiring she has plenty of time to create the beautiful hanging ornaments also for sale.

Himmelis arrived in Finland from Sweden and central Europe. The word means sky and describes well the hanging objects which are admired from below. In the past, a new himmeli would be made every year to welcome a prosperous new harvest year.

The ornaments have gotten very popular in recent years and interest has grown to learn the craft as well. Pirkko is planning to also exhibit and teach her craft at the Market. Make sure to drop by on the right day!
